Today I performed my duet, ‘I dreamed a dream’ from Les
Miserable the musical with Jess. We were to first to perform and used
microphones on a stand and centred ourselves in the middle of the stage. We
chose this positioning because we didn’t have much movement for our duet, only
strong facial expression because ultimately, the lyrics and how you sing the
song is where the emotion and story come from.
I felt overall that the performance went well and I performed
to a high standard. My diction was clear and I used my articulation, legato and
staccato to be sure of this. Words such as ‘thunder’, in legato and ‘hope’, in
staccato I made sure I pronounced clearly so the audience were able to
understand the lyrics which tell the story behind the song.
Despite the fact Jess and I used microphones; we projected
our legato and powerful notes well naturally, coming from our diaphragms.
However, to improve I need to work on projecting my head voice, especially when
the verses are so tightly packed, making it difficult to find a place to
breath.
Another element of the duet I need to improve on is the second
harmony, as I can easily sing this when I sing alone however, struggle to find
the note when singing alongside Jess, who is singing the original melody with
me on the harmony.
Overall, I think I performed well in the duet. Mine and Jess's voice work well together because they are differently pitched however sit nicely together, especially when harmonised. If u were to do the performance again, I would spend more time looking at the harmonisation if the piece and work on projecting the top notes in my head voice.
